“TINY GIANT” JEFF STEINBERG COMING TO EUMC

On Father’s Day, June 16, singer and humorist “Tiny Giant” Jeff Steinberg and his ministry team will deliver a special message for the 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship services at Englewood United Methodist Church, 700 E. Dearborn Street.

Jeff’s nickname comes from being more than a mere four feet six inches tall.  Born with no arms or hands and deformed legs, Steinberg shares his life story, struggles, hurts, growth, and achievements with a powerful singing voice and humorous public speaking talents that make him almost seem “larger than life”.  But he claims otherwise in his message of hope and encouragement.

“What I do is challenge people to put aside their excuses for why it is they think they are not good enough,” Steinberg said.  “If I can do what I do with what I have, then the person reading or listening to me can do more with what they have.”

He resided with his family for only 9 months after birth.  His childhood was spent in a Philadelphia child welfare shelter and more than 10 years in The Good Shepherd Home for the Physically Handicapped until he was 19.  Considerable time was spent in the Shriners' Hospital for Crippled Children that provided numerous surgeries, therapy, and his first prosthetic arm.

When he was 10 years old, he met the couple that changed his life.  Though born Jewish, he converted to Christianity when he was 11.

“I met a Christian couple that kind of became my surrogate parents,” Steinberg said.  “They invited me to go to church and camp meetings.  They were singers, and I loved what they did.  I got involved.  Everything about them was full of excitement and joy.  It was what I wanted.”

Now 61 years old, this inspiring and entertaining dynamo celebrates 40 years of traveling global ministry.  He has appeared on countless television talk and variety shows as well as at schools, churches, businesses, hospitals, prisons, disability awareness and other community events.  His autobiography Masterpiece in Progress is in its fifth printing, with more than 50,000 copies published worldwide; and he has recorded 10 music albums.

Entertainer Pat Boone called Jeff, "the Rocky of the ‘Handi-capable’!"; and motivator Zig Ziglar wrote, "Jeff teaches how to make it on grit, gumption, God and an indomitable will to overcome."

Wife Ellen Steinberg, teacher and seminar speaker, appears as an important part of the Steinberg Ministry Team.  Her message is particularly relevant to hurting women who have suffered the pain of divorce, loss of a family member, financial and other distress as a single parent, the trauma of physical disabilities, or physical or emotional abuse.

“We encourage every one in the community to experience this extraordinary, memorable event.  Some times we all feel sorry for ourselves.  Jeff doesn’t’ feel sorry for himself!  In fact, he says he is a ‘Masterpiece In Progress’; and challenges us to see our selves and others in the same light.  This is a great opportunity for anyone who has ever felt ‘handicapped’ by circumstances, relationships, or even their own attitudes to come and be uplifted,” said EUMC Senior Pastor Vic Willis.
