United Methodist Women
Making a Difference
PURPOSE
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is...
to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ.
to develop a creative supportive fellowship.
to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the Church.
HISTORY
Methodist Women's Mission work began in 1856 with the establishment of a Methodist Mission in India. In 1869, the Women's mission work was called the Women's Foreign Missionary Society.
In 1939, the Women's Society of Christian Service and Wesleyan Service Guild was formed.
In 1964, Women's Division was reorganized under the Methodist Board of Missions.
In 1972, the name was changed to United Methodist Women. We were restructured in 1997.
In 2012 United Methodist Women were restructured to better meet the needs of the local units.
UMW members make a monetary pledge in January of each year to support our Missions.
Our District has 45 units and over 3,000 members. We are known as the South west District of Florida.
